AUSTIN TX Now Requires Permits for Electric Door Locks
All electric door lock installations require that a building permit be obtained from the Development Services Department (DSD) Commercial Building Plan Review. The use of electric strike locks, electric mortise locks and electrified cylindrical locksets, delayed egress door locks & electromagnetic door locks must allow free egress at all times. If a building has a fire alarm system, these locks must interface with that system. For more information contact fireprevention@austintexas.gov
TWO PHONE LINES GONE
The 2013 edition of NFPA 72 the National Fire Alarm & Signaling Code quietly slipped in a revised list of transmission channels under 26.6.3.2 Digital Alarm Communicator Systems in the Supervising Station Alarm Systems chapter. The section 26.6.3.2.1.4 (A) states that any system employing a DACT shall employ one telephone line and one of the following transmission means: One-way private radio alarm system, Two-way RF multiplex system or a device using a performance based technology. The days of 2 telephone lines are over.

All testing and inspection reports are to be send to the web-based ComplianceCenter. If your customers buildings have any of the fire protection systems listed, the test and inspection reports for these systems are now required to be filed electronically.

AVERAGE AMBIENT SOUND LEVEL
The 2016 edition of NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code states the AVERAGE AMBIENT SOUND LEVEL is the root mean square, A-weighted, sound pressure level measurement over a period of time that any person is present, or a 24-hour period, whichever time period is the lesser.
PHOTOELECTRIC SMOKE DETECTORS
The 2016 edition of NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code states that photoelectric smoke detectors use either Light Obscuration or Light Scattering technology.

The 2013 edition of NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code now states that every new fire alarm system shall have a Document box or cabinet. It can be located next to the fire alarm control panel or in a different location that is identified at the fire alarm control. 7.7.2.
